Re-strengthening the District Centre
Masterplan for the redevelopment of the district centre, Hoboken, Antwerp, BE
With this masterplan the City of Antwerp wants to create a framework for short and long term projects that will help to revitalize the historical centre of the district. The masterplan deals with social, ecological, economic and cultural aspects and is built up around three themes.
The first theme deals with strengthening the coherence of the district centre. The quality of the public space plays a very important role in creating this coherence. The masterplan works on the connections between the most important functions and green spaces in the district centre. It also defines new development possibilities in the centre.
The second theme deals with a new traffic organisation that will create more space for pedestrians and cyclists, but most of all for social activity. The last theme explores ways to re-establish the relationship between the district centre and the banks of the river Scheldt, to which the city and district owe their existence.
