Merging three separate parks into one central park in the heart of the district

THE GREEN HEART OF THE DISTRICT

ANTWERP, BE

The district of Merksem is lucky to have three beautiful parks located in its center. They lie adjacent to each other but are poorly connected. Many different activities and buildings have been located in the different parks without much coherence. This masterplan tries to create an integrated framework that will create a stronger connection between the three parks. The masterplan formulates concrete actions to implement this vision.

It is impossible to perceive the three parks as one uniform park. Every part has its own history and identity. We want to acknowledge this diversity and strengthen it as the identity of the park as a whole. ‘The spine’ is a new connection that runs all the way through the park and connects the different parts, thus strengthening the coherence and legibility.
