Feasibility study for the merging of two schools into a campus

In 2008 the Flemish Chief Architect selected a number of redevelopment projects for schools with a high complexity. To get the most out of these large scale projects a spatial feasibility study was judged to be necessary before the actual design of the buildings.

The project for which Brut was selected concerns the merging of a primary and a secondary school into an integrated campus with over 1300 students and 150 staff members. Both the internal organization of the school as the context of the project site affect the design of the campus.

The site is situated in one of the sub centers of the city, close to the train station. With this campus we have the possibility to reinforce this centrality. The challenge is to simultaneously integrate in the almost village-like surrounding and give this new landmark the look and organization it deserves and needs.

Our design works on all these different scales at the same time. A small design choice can have a big effect and the larger context can offer inspiration to the smallest detail.
