Renovation and extension of a duplex apartment

This stylish apartment in the south of Brussels dates from the twenties. These apartments were often equipped with a “chambre de bonne”, a bedroom on the top floor for the family’s domestics. There is the possibility to expand the apartment with 2 former “chambres de bonne”. The original style from the twenties is preserved and reinforced as much as possible. The extension on the top floor will be done in a contemporary interpretation of the same style. The 2 little rooms are combined into one continuous space.

We try to be as creative as possible in getting the most out of the limited surface. The floor will be the continuous and uniting element in the whole downstairs apartment. The wall between the kitchen and bathroom is designed as a multifunctional piece of furniture that can be used from both sides. A newly designed taircase, that also includes a storage place, connects the 2 floors. The dynamic side wall connecting the two “chambres de bonne” hides all the necessary functional elements like a wardrobe, shelves, a toilet, a shower, …
