The Flemish Social Housing Company wants to develop this site in close collaboration with a local social housing company and the municipality. The site is completely closed in by the back of the houses along the 4 streets that define the building block. Therefore the site has no real front side and is not easy accessible either. The challenge is to look for the right answers to the heterogeneous back sides and to provide the development with its own identity, taking away this back side feeling.
Open areas this size are scarce in the dispersed fabric of housing development in Flanders. That’s why we decided to develop our neighborhood around a green park that preserves this feeling of spaciousness. The new constructions will surround the park, each reacting in their own way to the neighboring back sides. Besides the functional and recreational use, the park also has an ecological value, for example, offering space for sustainable water management solutions. Car traffic is avoided as much as possible on the project site by offering collective parking close to the entrances. Pedestrian and cyclists can move freely and safely around.
